Bhutan

Bhutan, often revered as the 'Land of the Peaceful Dragon', is still regarded as one of the world's most magical and pristine destinations. Known for its spectacular mountain terrain, varied flora and fauna, and its unique ancient Buddhist monasteries, Bhutan is one of the last and least explored Shangri-la's.

Bhutan lies east of Nepal, and west of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. It is south of the Tibetan hinterland, and north of the Indian territories of Assam and West Bengal. Approximately 72 percent of the land is forested area, containing rare and endangered plant and animal species. There are two main population groups in Bhutan. The Dukpa, who are of Tibetal and Monpa origin, comprise 67 percent of the population, while the Lhotsampa who are of Nepali origin, form approximately 30 percent. The remainder of the population is comprised of indigenous tribal groups such as Toktop, Doya and the Lepcha of southwest Bhutan.

The Buddhist Himalayan Kingdom is said to be surpassed in its scenic beauty by its vibrant culture. The kingdom shares with Nepal the world's greatest concentration of mountains and fascinating heritage of Buddhism.
