Tibet

Standing at an average elevation of 16,000ft above sea level, Tibet is known as the 'roof of the world'. Several major rivers have their source in the Tibetan Plateau, including Yangtze, Yellow River, Indus River, Mekong, Ganges, Salween and the Yarlung Zangbo River (Brahmaputra River). Tibet is also home to Mount Kailash  a holy site for both Hindus and Tibetans (Hindus consider the mountain to be the home of Lord Shiva).
Lhasa, Tibet's traditional capital and the capital of Tibet Autonomous Region, contains two world heritage sites: the Potala Palace and Norbulingka, the former residences of the Dalai Lama. Lhasa also contains a number of significant temples and monasteries, including Jokhang and Ramoche Temple.
Due to its high altitude, travelers with a history of heart difficulties, lung problems or anaemia, should consult a medical advisor before planning a trip. Having been opened to tourism only in the mid-80s, travelers should be prepared for an adventure as regards to hotel accommodation and other services.
